Lisbon: Amalia Rodrigues Blog Post
I have learned a lot about this woman during this trip. I learned that she can sing in five different languages: Portuguese, French, Spanish, English and Italian. She was the most famous woman at the time. She was very interested in clothing, jewlery, and sunglasses. She grew up as a seamstress and working her whole life. I also learned that she had a parrot that is still alive today. She was married twice. Once because her parents really wanted her too. Her other marriage was with a man she loved who died just two years before her of a heart attack which is the same way she died.
Her contribution was so important because she created a community within several countries. She was able to sing in so many languages which helped to unite these countries in a common love. She also was able to sing about something that is political which was very controversial at the time. She was a powerful woman and was able to pass off this album as talking about her love story. This has changed society because this is starting to become more common. Artists are able to sing about whatever they want know and freedom of speech is part of our everyday life because of people like Amalia Rodrigues.
I believe she has been commemorated well. The museum we went to was preserved well and had so many different things that showed what she was like. She had many awards and dresses, and many pieces of her items when she was alive. I think this is a good way to celebrate her. It gives the viewer an eye into her everyday life. It also was helpful to have a walking tour because it helped us to learn more about her by what the guide was telling us. It was interesting to be able to see into her life and learn more about her through this museum.
I love this post Elease! You make some great points about Amalia, I totally agree she was so powerful! The story about her disguising her political commentary as love songs was so fascinating. Beyond her strength of character, you can tell the people of Portugal are so proud of her. She really pioneered the fado genre into more widespread popularity, which has made an incredible contribution to Lisbon as a cultural capital.
