Paris Woman: Your Choice Blog

The woman that I am choosing is Marie Lurencin.  She is from Paris and is initially trained as a porcelain painter.  She the began learning painting and frequented with other famous artists.  She was influenced by Cubist painting from the 1920's however she created her own style based on light, pastel tones and dreamlike environments.  She also helped to design theaters and ballets.  Her art shows animated almost ethereal figures that look like they are otherworldly.  However, the images she depicts are based on people.  Her paintings are similar to something the Picasso created however, the way she creates them is much softer looking and magical.

I think she is so important to the art world because she is a well known cubist, modern art, artist.  She is also a woman.  Many other artist especially with this style of art are men.  This is an important factor because many of the paintings she creates are of woman.  This is important because not only is she is a woman her famous paintings are woman.  This is changing society and her field because there is more paintings of woman and more artists that are woman who are getting represented because of artists like her.  Having art from someone like her makes it so there is more variety.  You can tell by her style and feminism that she uses more colors that are bright and fun.  She also creates paintings of figures with an ethereal sense that makes it different than other artists before her.

I do believe she was commemorated well.  In the museum that we were at Orangerie Museum she had a whole room dedicated to her art.  There was a plaque on the wall telling her story and paintings of her out and about the room.  This is a well known museum with art from other famous artist.  Therefore she is in a museum that shows her status as an artists.  I do believe this is a good way to celebrate her.  Art is meant to be seen and having a space entirely for her art shows how prestigious and beautiful her art is.  I also appreciate that they are able to tell her background story and give her credit for how she came to be such an amazing artist.

  1. This is really cool, I'd never heard of Marie Lurecin before! I think that learning about her can help us see how Paris is a cultural capital. Paris is a city that fosters creativity and allows for artists to explore their abilities and innovate their art. It also shows how Paris represents people from a variety of backgrounds and styles of art. They are diverse in what they offer which is amazing to see because it really shows how cultured this city is.

  2. She is a great example of a woman who pushed back against society’s norms and did her own thing. Her signature pastel colors is the perfect feminine touch to the history of art at the time. Her deep connection to art and the need to show a representation of women directly correlates with what makes Paris a cultural capital. Paris is a place where people could come and be. She put females in the center of her portraits because they deserved a chance in the spotlight too.
