Amsterdam Art: Your Choice Blog Post

The artwork that I picked for Amsterdam was Port en Bessin by Georges Seurat in the Kroller Muller Museum.  This painting is an impressionist painting in the style of millions of tiny dots on a canvas.  The tiny dots are clumped together in a way to make it look like an image.  The image this is depicting is a port in Amsterdam that has boats and a canal.  The Amsterdam flags are waving in the background.  The sky is darker in the painting is darker than the canal.  The canal is darker here in Amsterdam so you can tell the artist was knowledgable and studied the landscape around.

I believe this painting was historically important because it shows the wave of impressionism that was popular in that era.  It was also culturally important because it shows Amsterdam and the things that make up Amsterdam (canals, flags, boats, etc.).  This helps you to realize the things that make up Amsterdam.  It is also culture significant because of how impression changed painting.  Impressionism was the beginning of a different more creative style of painting that causes more imagination of the viewer.  This helps the viewer to "finish" the painting with their own creative mind.  This type of paintings is so revolutionary to what was done previously.

I believe this painting was so important to this cities capital because it shows Amsterdam in a new light.  It shows the canal and boats that is so integral to Amsterdam.  This helps us to see Amsterdam and view it as the painter saw it as well as use our own imagination.  This also shows what is important to someone who is from Amsterdam.  Amsterdam is known for their canals and their river cruises.  This shows that the artist knew what Amsterdam was like and what made it so unique.  This helps Amsterdam to become a cultural capital because you are able to see what makes Amsterdam so unique to Europe.

  1. I love this post!! You mentioned that this painting contributes to Amsterdam as a cultural capital because it shows their infamous canals. I totally agree that it paints a great picture of Amsterdam during that period it was painted on. We are able to see what the painter saw during his life and I think that's super cool. Keep up the good work.
