Amsterdam: Balinese Blog Post
In my time eating the Balinese food I loved the experience. I thought it tasted amazing. I noticed there was a lot of color. There was brown, orange, green, etc. It included rice, and many other different kinds of protein. I liked that there was ways to try several different kinds of foods. It was fun to be able to switch around and pass towards others. I noticed a combinations of flavors, sweet, spicy, nutty, salty, etc. I noticed that the restaurant was dim and was very nice. They served the food on warming plates. There were many different fun drinks.
I believe this kind of food is important historically for Amsterdam specifically because it has held onto the culture of it for so long. I loved learning about how Amsterdam is the only place that you can still eat like this. I also found it interesting learning about the Trading company and how they brought all of these different spices to the Amsterdam and created more flavor because of it. I also appreciated that they described how this kind of flavor and eating is no longer anywhere else in the world and is unique to Amsterdam. This shows how important it is for Amsterdam to keep this culture.
I believe this contributes to Amsterdam being a culture capital because of how it shows they hold onto the culture of things. I appreciate that they continue to do dinners like this because it shows how important the spices was to continuing the culture of Amsterdam and to the rest of the world. Having these spices changed the world because previously the rest of the world did not have different spices. I appreciate how Amsterdam was able to bring these different kinds of foods over and continued the tradition. It shows how the trading company was integral in the development of the world.
Hey Elease, great job! I think your blog post did a great job of describing what you saw and tasted trying Indonesian food. You mentioned that this food is important for Amsterdam because it holds onto its culture which I agree with. It is very true that since Amsterdam is holding onto this tradition, it is embraces old traditions.
ReplyDeleteNice post, Elease! You're right that the food contributes to Amsterdam's status of being a cultural capital by holding onto things from the past. There is a rich history with the Dutch trading company that it keeps ties with. I do think there is a complicated history to acknowledge when we think about the food and how it is a fusion of multiple cultures and foods as well.
ReplyDeleteElease, I loved what you had to say about preserving the presentation of Balinese food in Amsterdam! The unique spread of different plates was a highlight for me as well, and learning about the rich history about the trading company made the experience even more enjoyable. Holding onto traditions and recognizing where they came from is so important, and Balienes food is certainly one of the things that makes Amsterdam a cultural capital.
