Lisbon Art: Your Choice Blog Post
The painting that I am choosing to write about is "The Wreck of a Transport Ship" by Joseph Mallord William Turner. This painting depicts two ships sailing in extremely rough waters. There was one a ship with sails that are slanted sideways. The other one does not have sales but a bunch of people is shown in the boat rowing. The water is almost as high as the boats and there is some rocks that is dangerously close. The water is white showing the roughness of the waves, and the sky is a greyish hue that shows it is stormy. The colors in the ship are extremely stark against the rest of the waves and sky. There are men with bright red coats.
This painting is an English painting so I believe it depicts an English scene. This I can tell is because of the red coats that are iconic to old English soldiers that is depicted inside of the boat. I do not think this is significantly important to Portugal though. However, according to the professors the museum was created by a man who only buys "The best of the best" paintings. This intrigued me because I wonder what made this painting so important that this man wanted to buy it. I do understand that it is beautiful and done so well.
I believe art similar to this adds to the city as a cultural capital because of how Portugal thrives on its use of water and boats importing things in and out. This relates to England as well because they also thrived on their trading with the African Slave Trade. These two cities relate with those things because both cities have colonies in the Americas and "trade" with Africa. This painting portrays how important that boats and having "control" of the seas it is for Portugal and England. It also gives the city more importance when they have high end art that people can come too. Inside the museum we saw many different school groups that were touring the museum. This allows the students to get educated on art as well as other people like us.
Awesome post Elease! This art totally describes how Portugal uses boats to import things in and out, that was a good observation. I have heard that this painting is often featured in tourism promotions and marketing campaigns! I think it showcases Lisbon's artistic heritage and attracts art enthusiasts to the city.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Elease! I really like how you relate this to another place (England) as well. As you said, this painting depicts the importance of boats and exploration, especially in Portugal. This painting seems to add to the city as being a cultural capital in two ways actually. First, the fact that it is art and we have seen the importance of art in cultural capitals so far. Second, exactly what you described about the content of the painting and exploration.
