Lisbon Woman: Your Choice Blog Post
For my woman of choice I am doing Queen Maria the second of Portugal. We learned a lot about her because of our trip. I learned that she became queen at 7 years old. This made her entire life about how to be the best queen ever. They sent her all around Europe to become as educated as possible. She was also supposed to marry her uncle but they eventually over ruled this and she ended up getting to marry a liberal man who was a good king. She had 12 kids and worked to help people have a better life and did her best to help prevent people dying from cholera. She died having childbirth too young at 34 years old.
Her contributions are so important because she helped to standardize public health for Portugal. She also continued to help fight cholera. She was constantly fighting for the welfare of the people of Portugal. She has helped to change society because she was able to be a queen of Portugal without having a king before. This was not common during this time period. This helped to show people that a woman can be a good queen even when they are not married to a king. This also shows people that woman can be a good leader. Having her be a queen helped the people to resolve issues that other royalty would not have thought of previously.
I believe she has been commemorated well. She has. a royal theater named after her. Royal theaters are very important in Europe because they were a central spot for people. Especially rich people and royalty this was a spot that was very high class, and very fancy. It is also important to help Portugal because it helps to give Portugal culture. For this, naming a royal theater is a high honor which she deserves. Having such an important building named after her shows her importance and helps people remember her. Queen Maria helped to change Portugal and helped to make a difference to the people of Lisbon.

ReplyDeleteI loved reading your blog post Elease! She faced a lot of tricky obstacles such as becoming queen at such a young age and having her uncle take over for her. She ended up making a lot of amazing contributions to the public health of Portugal, and I think that it was because she was able to become a powerful woman. Women today still face obstacles that dampen their ability to make change since men always seem to have more power. She is a great example of a woman becoming powerful and doing great things with it!
ReplyDeleteMaria the second of Portugal was a really incredible, influential leader. Many of the obstacles that she faced were simply issues of the social roles of women at the time. Childbirth was very dangerous at the time as it still is for many, and it was an obligation of her position occupying much of her time and energy. She was able to make substantial changes despite the many social and medical obstacles that she had to overcome.
