Madrid Woman: Your Choice Blog Post
The woman I want to write about today is Condesa De Pardo Bazon. This woman was an intellectual who wrote many stories. She wrote anything from a narrative, a fairy tale, children books, poems, articles, etc. She was the first woman to become a professor in the big university in Madrid. She was the superior in her job title, however, the other professors at her school would extremely prohibit other students from going to her lectures. She was a Catholic that believed in Darwinism. This is a huge deal for the time period. She is smart and knowledgeable but still has a religious background. This was uncommon for religious people to believe in evolution. I really like her for many reasons but for this detail specifically because she did not have to sacrifice her beliefs for realistic knowledge.
Her contribution is so important because she is a pioneer for woman teaching at a university level. She is also important because she wrote so many things throughout her lifetime that she inspired people of all ages and socioeconomic status. Another thing that she was a pioneer in was technology. This is so important because she was able to believe in something that worked. She was able to depict different things that would end up working out such as technology and phones as well as Darwinism. She has been able to change her country because of advocating for woman as professors as well as show that women can be pioneers and knowledgeable for many different subjects.
I believe that she has been commemorated well. She has a statue in her name. She also so many books by her that through people reading her literature she is able to be more well known. Having some kind of award in the Madrid school would help to show her contributions more. She was so helpful in making the country of Spain more widespread with literature that having an award for literature specifically would help others to know how big of a deal she is and how much she has contributed to Spain specifically but also to Darwinism and technology as well.
Great post! I definitely think that the obstacle of having other professors boycott her would have been a huge obstacle. This probably was not only tough and frustrating in her career, but also personally. I am grateful this doesn't exist today. I have had so many genius professor who are women.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really great post, Elease! Just, going over the prompt for the comments: there are multiple things that Condesa De Pardo Bazon did that can contribute to the cultural capital of Madrid. Her writings are spectacular and contribute significantly for sure, but I believe that her role as an educator should not be understated. Powerful educators can help to shape generations of academics and can change the literary layout of a city for generations.
ReplyDeleteElease, I loved your post about Condesa De Pardo Bazon. I didn’t know a lot about her. Being the first female professor at such a large university must have created many difficult obstacles to overcome. I like how you pointed out that many of the other professors there would not allow students to come to her lectures. I cannot imagine that particular obstacle still existing today, at least not at BYU. But I know, in many other countries, this obstacle still very much exists with women in higher education.
