I have learned a lot about Agnès Varda during our time visiting her grave as well as visiting her house. I learned that first she was a movie director, photography, and revolutionary for her time. She was smart and used different camera angles to create a more unique angle for her films. Her films were always using a woman as a main character. She also loved to tell her autobiography about her life using her movies. She realized along the way that all movies are autobiographic so she decided to lean into it and tell her stories more. I really liked her because I learned how revolutionary she is. I also learned how important it is to have women in film. I really have grown to love her and her work because of how much we needed the stories she is telling. We needed to have stories of women told by women with new ideas that women should have.
Her contribution in film is so important because of her ideals. Her films show the transformation of women specifically in showing what we should be rethinking as women and men. This has been helpful in showing how important women are in film and how film is so heavily focused around men that it becomes sexist towards women. Her contribution is so important because we need more women in our films. Her contribution has changed society because it is beginning to show the stark contrast between male and woman led films and how although they are different the quality of cinema does not change.
I my opinion yes she is commemorated well. She has a large mural, a grave with a statue, and her house is left empty to show towards others. However, a way that she is not commemorated well is how much she is valued even after death. Although she has many ways to prove her importance, she does not have national or international attention, she does not have the recognition for her amazing movies that she deserves. I had never heard of her before this study abroad, I had never seen any of her movies, and I did not know what she had done. This makes me think that although she is revolutionary, she was not given the recognition she deserves in regards to changing cinema and changing how underrepresented women in cinema are.
I love your thoughts about Agnes Varda, Elease! One thing I learn about Paris through Agnes is how accepting the city was of her films. They show Agnes with respect and many male filmmakers would say she was one of the best filmmakers. Agnes Varda deepen my understanding on how important art/films is to Paris!
