Paris: Simone de Beauvoir Blog Post

I have learned a lot about Simon de Beauvoir during my time in Paris.  I learned about her opinions in "The Second Sex".  I have learned about her ideals of how men and women allow us to become the second sex.  I learned about how she is a philosopher and somewhat of a autobiographical author.  She believes in open relationships and not getting married.  I also learned of how much of a trailblazer she was in academia and how she was important in founding and creating feminism.  Something that I really appreciate that she believes in is freedom of choice and how the consequence that follows will become your responsibility.

I think her contribution is so important because feminism is so important.  Her ideals and philosophies gave more ideals and more power to the second wave of feminism.  This helped to continue to grow the progressiveness of feminism and build a foundation of ideals that more people agreed with that connected with them.  Society has been changed because her ideals helped to "call out" not only men, but also women for "allowing" ourselves to be oppressed.  "The Second Sex" was specifically eye opening because it showed how women are different not only by the way we look but also by the way we think.  She spoke of how it helps to create a better society because of our differences and we should not be oppressed because of it.

I believe they have commemorated her but not in the way she deserves.  She has changed feminist ideals and has helped to make feminism more widespread.  However, she really does not have anything that shows how much of a difference she made.  She has a grave that gets decorated and kissed.  Which shows that many people find her important.  However, I do believe that she should be commemorated in some other way.  Her name should be more widespread to people across the country as well as internationally.  Something I really appreciate is that "The Second Sex" is still widespread and read often.

  1. I love your post, Elease! I think it is so beneficial to learn about Simone de Beauvoir and the struggles she dealt with. I know in her book, “The Second Sex” she talks a lot about how society has defined women to be inferior to men and how that is an ongoing obstacle. I feel like society has come a long way since then and I am grateful that we as don’t have to deal with similar struggles to the same extent that Simone de Beauvoir had to face.

  2. This is a really cool post, Elease! I think that Simone de Beauvoir would be a really good subject to apply to questions to questions 2 and 3 of the final. If you did a little bit more research on her that might help you to flesh out an argument, I would be sure to review the reading we were assigned from the Second Sex. I also appreciate that The Second Sex is well studied by people doing gender women's studies. I wish it were better studied by philosophy students as I believe that it opens up a critical branch in philosophy along with a few other fields.
