Sintra: Quinta da Regaleira Blog Post
When we went to the Quinta da Regaleira I was in awe. It was so beautiful seeing the different towers, caves, tunnels, and chapels. This place was a maze of beauty. I noticed a lot of different building made of rocks and the caves were very detailed with many different loops and holes. All were naturally eroded. We also were able to walk down this really deep well that had stair case around in a circle. The paths we walked on were wide and very clear paths. There was beautiful nature around. This area was like walking around finding hidden treasures. There was beautiful scenery and trees.
This castle is important for many reasons historically and culturally. One of these reasons is because it is a landmark for Sintra that it can claim as a popular place. It also is important according to the professors because it is esoteric. This makes the place so interesting to people coming because it gives the visitor the feeling of magic with an edge of intrigue because of how religious it is as well. It also was the place that Saint Teresa was living in and studying in. This is where she received the vision of seeing "her Jesus". I can see why this story resonated with Dr. Hegstrom. This story also most likely resonates with many other people which adds to the importance of Quinta da Regaleira.
I believe this contributes to Sintra as a cultural capital because it is something that is so close to Lisbon so people will continue to go to this town to see the Quintra da Regaleira as well as the castle we saw Friday. Both of these things bring people to Sintra and adds to the intrigue of Portugal as a whole. It also adds to the culture because it shows that Portugal still has old things even though they had a massive earthquake that effected most of these super old things. This shows that Portugal is still similar to other cities in Europe. Most people appreciate Europe because of how old the things in Europe are. Portugal can still claim to have these old things because of buildings like Quinta da Regaleira.
I liked this post a ton! I also enjoyed getting to see the castle and I agree that the religious aspect is a notable addition to the estate. I think draws in tourist because there are depictions of Christ and it is where Saint Teresa was living. I always think castles draw in a lot of visitors for their architect and history.
