Vienna Art: Your Choice Blog Post

For my art work of choice I am choosing the painting called "Portrait of a Woman" by Gustav Klimt.  This painting depicts a woman in a black gown.  The shoulders are puffy, her hair is pulled back, and she has a short necklace with a charm on it.  She has her hand resting on a piece of furniture and she is looking away from the viewer.  Her skin is a stark white contrast from the black of her dress.  She has rosy cheeks.  There is a tapestry in the back ground and her dress is sparkly like there are gem stones on it.  This gives you the ideal that she has money to spare on nicer things.

I believe this painting is important for a variety of reasons.  First of all this painting is of a woman which contrast to what we are used to seeing from paintings at the time this was very important.  Another reason is because this woman was so important for the shift of fashion cultural.  Like Professor McFarland said this woman shifted the focus of fashion from using corsets and having the tiniest waist possible, to woman being more comfortable and relaxed in their clothing.  This is a huge shift in fashion that is still so applicable today.  She was also the partner of an artist named Gustav Klimt who was a big presence in the artistic world.

This painting contributes to this city's status as a cultural capital because having paintings from an artist who is so famous helps Austria to show its importance.  It helps the world to realize that Austria has just as many famous paintings as other countries in Europe.  It also helps to show a woman like Emilie Floge that is so famous and renowned in the fashion world in a city like Austria.  This draws the interests of not only art lovers but also fashion lovers to Austria.  This helps to show that Austria is fashion forward as well.  Having a woman who shifted the focus of fashion so much in Austria helps to make Austria more memorable.

  2. Love this painting. Art and fashion are more connected than we originally think. But capitals across Europe have shown us that fashion is a peak industry in the modern world. A way that they can hold their strength from the past but create something new.

  3. I really enjoyed reading your blog post! You did a great job showing how "Portrait of a Woman" by Gustav Klimt helps make Austria a cultural hotspot. By featuring a woman who changed fashion trends, the painting links art with important historical changes. This attracts not just art lovers but also fashion fans, showing that Austria is influential in both areas. Having famous works by Klimt highlights Austria's rich art scene and cultural importance. Your post clearly shows how art can help boost a city's cultural status.
