Berlin: Käthe Kollwitz Blog Post

During our time in Berlin we got to visit an entire museum dedicated to Käthe Kollwitz work.  Many of her work was done in pencil or charcoal.  There is lots of black and white type images that show sketches of the beautiful works of art she has done.  There were also many sculptures of a woman's body throughout the museum.  According to the museum informational paragraph Käthe was an artist during the 1900's.  She was recognized for her work very early on during her career which was uncommon during the time period for a woman.  She was a very caring and kind person who was an advocate for preventing and fighting different social injustices.

Her contribution was so important because she was fighting different social injustices.  She created a name for herself through her art work and used her popularity to help fight for these different social injustices.  She also was a leader in using her mental health issues as a way to connect with others by painting and creating art that helped to show empathy towards others.  The way her art work is holds a deeper meaning and helps to connect with others who had family die in the wars such as her.  This helped to connect with the public.  This has changed the art world because she was one of the first people to paint about war and the effects of war.  She was able to do this in an artistic way that showed the deep meaning of her art by still making the art beautiful.

I believe that Käthe Kollwitz has been commemorated well.  She had an entire museum dedicated to her which is very uncommon among female artists.  Many other male artists will have an exhibit in a museum but she was able to have an entire museum.  The plaques on the wall showed how important she is and told of her story.  This helped to make her more well known because each visitor learns more and more about her.  It is also a great way to celebrate her achievements because people are able to look at the different things she has achieved and are able to see how talented she is through her artwork.

  1. Great post! Kathe Kollwitz's art was very critical of significant parts of the history of Germany, particularly the wars Germany has been a part of and started. Her ideas are very reminiscent of ideals held in modern German democracy such as providence or protection for everyone. Her art is very reactionary in nature, it is protective of future generations that have been victimized by warmongers, and it creates a new precedent for antiwar sentiment in Germany, which creates a better and more marketable nation.
