Berlin Monument: Your Choice Blog Post

For my Monument of choice I am choosing to do the Monument of the Murdered Jews.  This monument showed extensive amount of grey blocks.  These blocks started very small a few inches off the ground.  However as you kept walking toward the center they began to get bigger and bigger.  They became what seemed like 15 feet tall.  These blocks were all the same size width and length just the height would vary.  In the center of these blocks there were stairs leading to the museum exhibit.  Inside the exhibit you could learn more about the Holocaust.  The museum would have many things you could read about and learn about specific stories about Jews in the Holocaust.

This exhibit is very important historically and culturally.  The Holocaust was an important part of the entire worlds history.  However for Germany specifically it is something that is devastating and something that they have to constantly be reminded of.  It contributed so much to their history that having this monument helps us to remember more about the feelings of confusion and magnitude that was happening at the time.  This also is important to the culture of Germany because of everything that Germany has done to the rest of the world as well as how Germany was effected during the war.

This monument contributes to Germany as a cultural capital because it shows so much of Germany's history.  This is so important because it is acknowledging everything that has happened to Germany and the rest of the world because of the Holocaust.  This also helps us to learn how far Germany has come.  When you look around from this monument you see that there is several different embassies from all around the world.  This shows that Germany is actively working with many different countries to be an active political part of Europe and the rest of the world.  Having this monument at the center of it shows that Germany knows and cares about how it has effected the rest of the world.

  1. Elease, this is such a good blog post! My time spent at the Monument to the Murdered Jews was so moving and inspiring, so I love that you chose to write about it. I love how you wrote about how this monument is important because it shows that Germany acknowledged what happened and their part in it. I also agree with what you said about it showing how far Germany has come. It is so cool to see a country building a memorial for victims at their own hands. It is truly inspiring to see a country turn around, acknowledge the past, and make changes for a better future.

  2. Really great post, Elease! I really loved what you said about how this monument adds to Berlin and its history. This memorial adds to Berlin as being a cultural capital because it emphasizes an important event that has happened here. And, of course, this monument is important because we need to recognize those who were impacted during WWII and The Holocaust. And I found it moving how it did this. It allowed the visitor to bring what they wanted to and take what they wanted from the experience.

  3. It was really interesting to read about this monument. I totally agree with you that this monument adds to Berlin's status as a cultural capital by showing the dark history it has. I love what you said about this monument being near the embassies of other countries and how there could be some symbolism there that Germany won’t let something like this happen again. They will stay a part of the European Union and NATO. I think cultural capitals have strong ties with other cultural capitals.

  5. Such a great post, Elease! The Monument of the Murdered Jews was such an interesting monument to me too, so I really enjoyed reading this! I loved your thoughts about how Germany recognizes that this was a part of their past, as well as the growth they have had since then. It shows that as a city they were able to overcome such a dark time.
