Stockholm: Greta Thunberg Blog Post

I have learned a lot about Greta Thunberg here on my trip.  We have talked about her in Stockholm as well as Amsterdam about the contributions she has made.  She is a politically minded person who is working toward making reforms specifically climate change policies.  She is consistently holding presentations to help reform climate change policies by protesting and sometimes being arrested for it.  I think this woman is very brave and is someone who fights for what she believes in.  She is willing to put things at risk for things she cares about which is very difficult and is a testament to how strong she is.

Her contribution is so important because she is fighting for something that matters.  She is fighting for things that can be changed.  The things she is fighting for also are things that can extremely help the people of Sweden and the whole country as a whole.  It can also help how the things throughout the rest of the world continue to change and grow.  Although things have not yet been reformed she is raising awareness to people and showing people the effects of climate change.  She is working toward a following with people who care about climate change and helping to raise more and more awareness towards it.

Greta Thunberg is still alive so she does not have anything named after her or a statue in her honor.  However, something that shows how well she is commemorated is by the amount of followers and attention she has.  Not only does she get many people to come to her demonstrations and protests, she also has 14 million followers on instagram.  This is a substantial amount and shows that many people are taking her seriously.  However, she does still have many people who discredit her for being so young, having mental disorders, and being a woman.  She continues to fight through this animosity and is successful in many ways at raising awareness.

  1. This is a wonderful post Elease! I like your point about Greta being commemorated via the positive attention she has received. I really think she functions as a icon for Sweden in some ways, she represents a lot of Swedish values tied to preserving the earth and being aware of the effects of our actions. These values are part of what make Sweden the cultural capital that it is!

  2. Hi elease! What a great post. Learning about Greta Thunberg in Stockholm deepens our understanding of the city as a cultural capital by showcasing its support for activism and global causes like climate change. Greta's bravery in protesting and raising awareness challenges societal norms and highlights Stockholm's role in fostering environmental consciousness worldwide. Despite criticisms, her widespread influence and large following demonstrate Stockholm's impact on global climate discussions

  3. Hey Elease!! One think I think that Greta has had to overcome is constantly being underestimated and being delegitimized for being a girl. Girls are rarely seen as key players in society and because of this some people don’t take the issue she is fighting for seriously. It shows how much underlying misogyny there is as we don’t take women’s complaints and opinions seriously just because they come from the “wrong” mouthpiece.

  4. Great post Elease! Greta Thunberg has added to Stockholm's culture by emphasizing climate change! As you said she has a big audience and this is something that Sweden is known for now. Without her we would have never visited those steps or maybe Stockholm at all.
